I knew this guy once, broke every CC his buddies ever cast...
« on: February 02, 2012, 01:46:59 PM »
Howdy howdy fellow Imperials, mind lending a hand? I'm learning as fast as I can, but MMOs are still new to me.

First question for my fellow BH. This is the build I've been working with, recently respecced to it and saw a dramatic improvement in my ability to hold aggro and damage in PvP. Is it any good? Or am I going about it all wrong? One thing I'm having trouble with is keeping the heat down, and I'm not sure how to do it properly.

Next question is for those of you who've run with me. As I mentioned, I'm learning and it helps if I know what I'm doing wrong or need to improve on. I've picked up a good deal:

  • Selective pull
  • Hold the threat(s) and leave the weaks to the DPS
  • Taunt as a last resort
  • Pop my defense casts early
  • DON'T BREAK ALLIES CC (this one I'm still fubaring on from time to time)
  • Treat ally health as a resource (so long as they have 1HP left they're still alive)
  • Guard goes either to healer or spike DPSer that out-aggros me

Any tips, tricks, or advice will be much appreciated.

First off shield the healers keep them shielded...... as for aggro in pvp there toons and not AI to get aggro you have to be the biggest threat if you have aoe etc use them those hurt everyone and draw attention to you. Also go for there healers always look for them thats a great aggro builder........ yes CC donot break...... defence wise use your slowest cooldown constatnly like kinetic shield for shadow use there slower cooldowns such as deflect once you have two or more on you to break stun chains use any force wave like ability you have dont run if there around you locking you as soon as you get a half a second respite pop the wave it knocks all back and down and gives you a respite.... build defence etc shield you name it gives longer life utilize aoe as much as possible and stun or knock down as much as you can if your tank your not the killer you are the aggro point the cannonball per say let the killers kill your job is to annoy everyone to no end this is my advice...

May the force be with you

PS.... Always keep moving weaving ducking thats where aoe comes in handy never stay still a still target is a easy target and therefore a dead target keep moving use the terain around you to better your defenses remember if lightning is on you and you run around a pillar poof lightning gone always watch the entire perimeter around you.

I agree with Forcestrike and with what you said. Another key thing is to not get discouraged. I have run in many groups where the tank was chastized for breaking CC, not grabbing agro back, losing agro to begin with and such (not in SWTOR but in other games I have played) and while yes it can be a pain in the tush to wipe multiple times, the only way you are going to learn is through that practice. So my key advice is this:

Dont get discouraged
ask questions
learn from your mistakes
cherish your healers
have confidence in yourself.
mark targets
if you notice something going wrong announce it. Much better to try to adapt rather than wipe and say, "yea I thought that he was going to do that"

oh yeah and:
PS.... Always keep moving weaving ducking...

I encourage the world to be more Ducky  :P

Yeah I know aggro doesn't matter in PvP. In pvp the guard stays on healers, especially in huttball. It takes a group of DPS to take me and a healer down while running the ball.

As a BH tank, I don't have a knock-back ability available. I have a charge and the almighty Grapple though, and I abuse em in PvP when I can. PvE I've noticed I don't want the mobs away from me, my best aggro moves and aoes are all short range.

As for the "Duck" (TM)-ing and moving, I try, but I still don't have the hang of the mouse look. I started a new character and mapped a bunch of keys to try and force myself to learn not to "key-turn" but it ain't workin so well so far.

This is what i have W is forward S is backward E is right turn have to set it...Q is left turn have to set it....R is target nearest enemy.....F is target nearest group member or ally...Target while moving by just clicking the R key to pick nearest target and wack them one if you have a specific target just run up to them and push R nearest enemy aquire the target annoy them and at any time use the same method with target group or ally its how i never stop moving im not picking on one person im picking on them all whoever is closest gets the picking on.

What works also in PvP in general is to bind your A and D keys to strafe left and right and then bind your Q and E to hotbar buttons that way you have more options at your fingertips (pun intended).

Yeah don't break CC but you probably wont always have all the guys CC'ed. There will be usually 2 or 3 guys free so make sure to change targets to keep aggro up without having to AoE dps and break your CC.

I use the AoE taunt on cooldown and keep single taunt for runners that break from the pack or turn on a dps that doesn't understand what focus fire means. Just remember that taunt doesn't generate threat just forces them to direct their fire at you. You still have to damage them to keep threat on you after it wears off. Luckily taunt isn't useless in pvp in this game. It cuts down 30% incoming damage if the enemy is targeting someone other than you so it is awesome.
