An interview with: Mas
« on: October 26, 2011, 05:31:32 PM »

With great power comes great responsibility, such as answering questions for the enjoyment of The Guardians community. Without further ado, an interview with Mas:

Quote
You have a 9-year badge in your signature. Why, to you, does TG have such longevity, both for new members and veterans like yourself?

Without a doubt it's the community that we've cultivated that keeps me here. I think the majority of us who have been here for so many years have had peaks and troughs in our activity, mainly depending on how involved we are with certain games and real-life commitments. I spent most of 2009 without any involvement in The Guardians due to some serious events in my personal life, but as soon as I felt the urge to log back on to the forums I was confronted with the same buzz of excitement  over new divisions and new game content, not to mention a whole host of new faces. I think that's what keeps me here, and probably what makes it so accessible to new members, the fact that our community always welcomes you and there's always new friends to make and things to get involved in.

Quote
Who is Mas going to be in SW:TOR?

I don't tend to stray too far from real-life when it comes to game characters so Mas will be a smart-alec techie ;)

Quote
This interviewer already knew your faction answer. Justify yourself to Kilmar. He can be a bit of a crank, so be blunt.

I've got to say I'm so glad that it looks like the faction population-spread for TOR will not be one sided, I think it's fair to say in many other games the 'bad guys' just aren't that popular. For me though it came down to something as simple as class restrictions, I just had to be a Smuggler.

Quote
You're a European, yet you've been around nine years in a predominantly North American guild. Tell new members why GMT leads the way - or at least doesn't hamper the way.

Being so many hours apart from most people does have its disadvantages but I manage. I remember back in WoW when I would raid until 5-6am, in fact I'm sure a few people will remember me mysteriously appearing AFK during a few raids, when I'd actually fallen asleep at my keyboard. I think the best thing about being in a guild like TG though is the huge amount of diversity in our member base. Thanks to this guild I've made friends the length and breadth of the North America as well as South Africa, The Netherlands and also a few right here in the UK.

Quote
What game on the horizon do you think is the next big division for TG? Crystal ball and complete guess use allowed.

Aside from SWTOR (which you could argue is already TG's next big division), I would say while World of Warcraft may be on a steady decline I don't think you can ever say that Blizzard's days in MMO's are numbered. Whatever they're cooking up next will no-doubt be enormous. What I'd personally like to see is an MMOFPS, it just hasn't been explored enough as a genre, while there have been attempts (I loved Planetside) their just hasn't been an out and out classic in the genre as yet in my opinion. So to my mind, if anyone can take all the good pieces of other games and put them in to one package of awesome-ness, it's Blizzard!

Quote
What are you playing right now?

I'm desperately, DESPERATELY trying to finish Dragon Age: Origins... I know it's comparatively old now but I've never actually played it through to the finish. I've got a terrible habit of getting half-way then re-rolling! Hopefully I can get it done before Battlefield 3 lands on my doorstep.

Quote
You appear to be a very well dressed C3PO. Name the Guardian that's your R2D2.

It's got to be the unassailable Eagle4Delta, it would not surprise me at all to find out he's got rocket-thrusters in his thighs.

Quote
What class will be your Empire alt?

Right now I'd love to play as a Sith Inquisitor. I'd be really interested to see if the games story options allow you to play as the 'Good guy on the bad side' role and what kind of consequences that would have on your standing with your faction.

Quote
Explain Spotted Dick to us. Specifically, who is Richard? Did he have measles?

I haven't had Spotted Dick since I was at school! (You heard me...) From what I remember it's like a sponge and raisin pudding you have with custard? I can tell you, as much as you guys want it to be, it is not a popular English dish!

Quote
We have a TG Sports forum. Does the word "soccer" piss you off?

Not so much, soccer is a legitimate term for the game. What gets my goat, and that of most Brits, is the fact you refer to your game as 'Football'... when it barely involves any kicking whatsoever? I mean come on people. I'm willing to admit I drive on the wrong side of the road if you'll give me this one (in fact I'll even start spelling honour without a 'u' as well).

Quote
The object to your immediate left is the only weapon you have for your first SW:TOR raid. Describe the boss fight. And make sure you win.

To my left I have a drinks coaster with the words "You're not drunk if you can lie on the floor without holding on. Dean Martin". I think if years of playing Zelda and Pikmin have taught me anything it's to always wait until they expose their soft-red-glowing underbelly and then let rip, so as soon as they do I would launch this baby at them and hope for the best.

She's a tough old bird. Darth Liz.

I second that.  Especially if they have guitars that say I <3 Dick on them.

My grandma introduced me to Spotted Dick.  :P

My family (mom and dad and their parents) are all from England. Dover Kent and North Hampton. She buys it here in the states from a store called World Market. She is also a fan of Marmite as is my mom. My mom and her sisters just got back from visiting family there. I told them to bring me back a life size blue police box and they couldn't find one so no Tardis for me...for now. Hopefully I will be able to make it in a couple years and I will not come back empty handed.

Either way pretty spiffy interview. Great idea Adomnae! Mas you are not half as bad as I thought you were, only 3/5's.  ;D

Is he from Manchester?  If so, then he probably is.

Nice interview!!!  I expected a union jack sticker on the guitar... but "I <3 Dick" will have to do :)

And anyone who has a problem with the "ou" in english spelling should fouck ouff!  They invented the language, for Pete's sake!

As a Canadian, I'm of the mind that, while it's honourable for our neighbourhood Brit3PO to offer up a spelling concession to our southern neighbours, Rico is quite correct.

Screw red squiggles.

Oh, and:

Conflict of interest anybody?

Nice interview, Mas! Very entertaining!
