Arma 3 or Squad?
« on: March 04, 2017, 01:17:05 PM »
Been getting the itch to play something war-related lately and want something a bit more in depth than Battlefield.

Arma 3 looks extremely fun once you get past the learning curve. A full platoon with voice chat could make for some intense battles in multiplayer.

At the same time, Squad seems to be middle of the road between Battlefield and Arma. I know it's still in alpha but has great reviews!

If I will primarily be playing MP, will the Apex expansion for Arma be a must-buy, seeing as most servers have went that route?

Well, once I get done with errands today I'll be pulling the trigger on one of these so your feedback is appreciated!

I have both. I'm not a good source of info though. I agree that middle of the road is good. ARMA 3 intrigues me greatly but it seems to get the most out of it you really need to find the right people to play with. Squad seems to be perfect for me. Just waiting for it to develop some more. I haven't reinstalled since my SDS crashed a few months ago, need to try it out again.

Actually Rising Storm 2 looks pretty interesting but still more of a Battlefield style variant.

Personally if I had to choose from those three options I would pick BF1 first, Arma second and Squad last. To me the feel of squad is not what I'm into, if I could compare it to anything maybe CS:GO as far as combat feel.

Arma has great mods, but it is more realism based. King of the Hill mods and co-op multiplayer is fun and more realistic than BF1 and Squad. That being said, I enjoy BF1 combat more than the other two by far.

But yeh, if I could only buy one game I would probably get BF1, if you wanted more teamplay you could look for a BF guild. There are a few that you can just join as a visitor as well. But if you are into squad and know what the game is about you may as well give it a shot and see how it is. If you play less than 2 hours or have it for less than a couple days you can get a refund from steam if you don't like it.

You should temper any consideration of BF1 with the realization that there is pretty serious cheating going on.

My suggestion would be Arma 3, and make sure you download the Exile mod, especially if you're able to hook up with a few other people.

Build a base, defend said base, do some missions, raid other people's bases. Good times all around!

I bought squad but ended up getting a refund before 2 hours. Neat concept but I'm going to hold off until it's further along.

Having a blast in arma even though I'm only through bootcamp & VR training. Once I get a whole heck of a lot of hours under my belt I think I'll really enjoy it.

Bf1. Is that the series with wake island? Used to have an absolute blast with that! I'll most likely download again at some point. I just can't go back to bf3 or 4 right now.

I play BF1 all the time and haven't run into any hackers, I see people get banned like every 15 minutes though.

I don't and haven't played the game, I'm going from what's out there. I don't see this kind of stuff for the other two discussed.

Main point is, I think checking into these hacking claims is prudent before buying BF1.

My bad, forgot bf1 was the latest game. Looking for more teambased and less arcade.
Battlefield 2 was the one I was thinking about! May pick it up for $5

I am thinking about picking up ARMA 3 as part of the current Humble Bundle going on right now. Didn't know who all in TG had it, I may be interested in learning and getting something small to begin with started up.

I own BF1 but have hardly played it. Since I picked up my SSD and a 1070 I may be getting back into that soon too.

It's so different than any game I'm used to. It's tough but not as much as a learning curve as it's played out to be.

It's tough though, you need to really think and can't just aim and shoot like in BF. Every little thing you do makes a big difference whether you live or not.

If you're up for s challenge I'd say go for it. Campaign and scenarios (sp or coop) are super fun!

I'd recommend Squad if you're looking for team-based mil-sim. Arma III may be "more sim" than Squad, but its community is far less quick to work together on the spot. Most of the mods and game-modes rely on you already having a group to play with. In Squad, join any game and the teamwork is almost guaranteed. Pretty much everyone uses in game VOIP, there is an established CoC in every game that is followed, the combat is fairly realistic and more immersive than Arma imho. It can be a "bit" arcade y with things like FOBs allowing forward spawns, but I still maintain the realism is there. You won't be missing much comparing to Arma, and the community is a lot more mil-sim immersive and games are easier to just jump in to.

Others have mentioned Rising Storm 2. I've played Red Orchestra and Rising Storm, they are also both great "in between" games, sorta like Squad but a bit more arcade y. Also the teamwork isn't as automatic as it is in Squad. Squad just has implemented a great system and formed a great community that by far is the best at creating spontaneous and consistent simulation-quality communication and teamwork between random people.
