"HBO co-president Eric Kessler has said he thinks the move away from traditional television to an internet-based model is just a fad that will pass"

Where do these Presidents and CEO's come from? In all honesty, can't they grasp that things change and they should change their archaic models?

"A Lannister may always pay his debts, but fans of the show may not want to pay for cable."

LOL! Oh my goodness! That's hilarious.

I love the show. I don't pirate it; I watch it online with xfinity, along with other shows like The Borgias, Shameless , Dexter, etc. I know people who do pirate it though: Europeans. Apparently, they don't get HBO.

<3 HBO and Showtime are awesome. Apparently I have to start watching Mad Men as well. Too many good ones!

How many times are things that have staying power called fads? Rock n roll was just a fad. Video games were another. I could probably go on and on with things that were just fads.

Been off Cable/Satellite for a couple years now. I don't watch any shows regularly. Exceptions are Castle and Grimm at the moment.

Most of the stuff I watch is through Netflix and regular unpaid Hulu. Aside from a couple of the premium networks like HBO, I don't feel like I'm missing a whole lot. Though it could be the fact I'm too busy to sit and relax and enjoy myself by watching tv :(

As for Game of Thrones, getting it from HBO GO isn't bad as long as you know someone who might stop by and decided to log in for you with an account. You know, if they want to watch it with you. And possibly forget to log out when they leave.

Anyways, the online comic 'The Oatmeal' did a little bit about this very topic: http://theoatmeal.com/comics/game_of_thrones

The only reason I have cable at all is because my wife wants to keep it.

If it were up to me, I'd have just internet and run Roku, Hulu+ and Netflix all the time.

Guess what he's wrong.

I plan on canceling cable as soon as GoT is done. I will be only on internet TV from there on in. I am burned out on the crap and commercials. I might miss football, but in all honestly it really turned me off this year. The extra added time to add more commercials made the game almost unbearable to watch.

If I really need to watch a game I'll go to the bar.

The only reason I have cable anymore is sports, but I have less time to watch them anyways so maybe I should cut the cord too.

I love cable. I am able to keep up with multiple shows as they happen rather than catching them a season late. Without cable I would not have seen The Shield, Battlestar Gallactica, Stargate(any of them), Rescue Me, The Avatar, and so on. I tried Hulu but they are missing several networks and shows that I keep up with and Netflix is a season or so behind. That is great until you pop into a thread that tells you who shot JR and you aren't there yet.  ;)

I use Netflix as a sub for the premium channels like HBO and Showtime because I can get more for a cheaper price.

For my cable which includes my internet I pay 100 dollars. I can reduce that by about 50 if I cancelled cable and just used my internet, but my wife and I enjoy basic cable way too much to do that .

Also Mak, You have excellent taste in shows. castle and Grimm are a couple I watch currently as well.

He's an idiot, the only tv I have right now is internet tv and a netflix sub....only way it will be a fad is if the powers that be and their greed make licensing too impossible for anyone to support other than the big entertainment companies, and when that day comes, I will cut the cord completely and just read books.

My digital cable bill was up around $200/mo before I cancelled it two years ago.

Now I keep a basic broadcast cable package for $12/mo, cable internet for $50/mo, use a magic jack for phone service @ $20/year and get Netflix for $9/mo.

The only thing I miss are the HBO abd Showtime shows, but I can buy them all on DVD and it's still cheaper than paying that extra $130/mo.

It's been over a year now that I have had no cable.  A month or two after I canceled I got converter boxes for my older TVs and a simple inexpensive antenna.  I can get the basic networks and a bit more in case something is happening in the world I feel compelled to watch on TV.  But that is rare indeed.

Netflix and Hulu covers most movies and tv shows, sports is covered with the ESPN app on my 360. Total bill for all that is maybe $50 a month average as opposed to $100 to $150 for cable/satellite. It's a racket at this point...
