How many pets would it take to overwhelm a player you think? If we had 4 ranger sick their pets on a player would that be enough to take them out?

I found the pets to be pretty weak.  They are more remote hit points than damage generators.  Much more effective in PvE than PvP, as a smart team won't waste a second fighting them, but kill the source to kill the pet.

Pet's are stronger with fewer opponents (since their AI can get messed up and attack someone you don't want them to attack).  They are often squishy and get killed fast.  As a result they are better in PVE and 5v5 but a little weak in 8v8 and really weak in WvW.

In large fights it's better to pick ranged pets like spiders for rangers intead of melee pets (that will allow them to live longer) and since the Ranger will often be in a ranged group this will increase their effectiveness in WvW without getting blown up by AOE's all the time.

Oh, yeah, they are great in PvE, I assumed we were talking specifically about WvW.

I was watching a ranger video where the guy was stacking crit and using pets that have the highest precision (lynx, I think).  He sent just his pet in against a test dummy and it downed it in a surprisingly short amount of time.  I expected it to take like a full minute, but the lynx did solid damage.

Now, given, an actual player would be able to toss up CC and heal him/herself, but I think 3 pets from Rangers with proper traits could take down a player.

I haven't looked a pets from a damage perspective. They always seem a lot more squishy then I'd like them to be.

When I've used them in WvW, it's for more of a support role. With the fern hound I would keep it close to Revive fallen allies and use it for regeneration of allies as well. Also to apply a cripple/knockdown conditions.

I've also used a bird too. Generally pretty quick, I've found some groups (that aren't pouring on aoe, but why wouldn't they ?!) find it a hard time targeting the bird. I use it mostly for bleed effects (or blindness) and for quickening allies. Otherwise if you look at them funny they will fall over.

Bears are the only ones I've experience with that would last a few hits from other players. But it won't do near as much damage as a lot of others to be worth it.

Each pet has its own strengths.  Depending on your set up a pet can be pretty dangerous.  As mentioned earlier the ai can be difficult to manage but the proper pet and traits can have a huge impact.

The lynx for example is a straight dps pet.  No specials to cc, heal, buff, etc.  All 4 abilities are damage.  I know in spvp a pet really put someone on the defensive.

Overall id be surprised to see anyone die to a pet alone unless cooldowns are used.

Properly speced a rangers pet can deal great damage however it does gimp the ranger themselves considerably. With that said two maybe three lynx with the rangers traited into beastmastery could take a player that doesn't try and kill the pet as opposed to looking for the ranger could severely cripple an opponent if not kill them out right. I'd be willing to spec this way and give it a try if another ranger would as well. Plus the sic em shout would be a huge boon and most likely not even used in the vid mentioned earlier.

IMHO Pets aren't that great for killing, but I find them invaluable as a defensive tool.

In SPvP I run with both elemental and rock dog abilities.  When I have both out and am doing my typical dagger/dagger super fast hit, run, and dodge attacks I find people have a hell of a time staying on me.  The pets are annoying for some of the same reasons Mesmers are annoying to fight.
