Star Trek Online goes F2P in 2012

Euro Itchy and Scratchy land -- err, Star Trek Online, will be F2P in 2012.

"Don't be deceived by appearances, Luke. Wookiees aren't simply big shaggy humanoids. They have an ancient culture with subtleties of its own. They are creatures with close ties to nature, and a great affinity in their own way, for the Force." Obi-Wan "Ben" Kenobi, on Wookiees. (Star Wars: A New Hope Audio Drama)

I felt the same way. I really enjoyed playing my character too; Captain (became Rear Admiral) Thomas Sullivan Magnum XVI of the (Defiant class) USS Ferrari. By the end of the game, he used a Bat'leth in every ground based mission. It was so badassed using a Bat'leth in Borg space while everyone else was using a ranged weapon (by now, I betthat either EVERYONE is using a Bat'leth, or it's long since been nerfed).

Ultimately, ground combat was BORING, the different classes seemed a bit pointless, and there was a lack of content. The lack of content would have been fine had there been more sandbox elements, but no. Klingon faction was as pointless as monster play in LOTRO. The space part probably could have used some sprucing up too.

FYI, this game is still going strong. Player guilds (called Fleets) now have a starbase of their own and it is built through gaining fleet levels. Lots of cool mechanics.

This has been a public service announcement.

I'd definitely check it out if I had more HD space and I wasn't so busy.

HD space notwithstanding, STO is almost perfect for popping in a running a few missions in the galaxy just to relax. If you can drum up the space (pun aside) you should drop in on occasion.

Incidentally, you probably quit before duty officer missions were instituted. These add some flavor and are definitely a pop in and enjoy feature. I also find crafting more fun whereas at release I couldn't stand it, crafting being part of what drove me away.

I'm not sure, but IICR, I got into headstart, maxxed my level, lightly played the endgame content (whatever they had, that Borg mission). wandered around the galaxy doing little imprompu player gatherings, then I canceled my account. It's not that I disliked the game, I like Star Trek, but I wanted more things to do, and not a lot of TG were interested in the game after 2 weeks.

Did they add any interesting PVE content for Klingons?

Still have it installed, but between Halo 4, SWToR, and other things... I just never find time to double click the icon anymore.  :(

I can't answer that for sure as I don't have any Klingons. It's my impression that there is more content as a whole and not just for Klingons. The real reason I say anything at all is the F2P nature of the game. I came back after F2P went live, leveled up from about 30 to 50 on duty officer missions and just pop in occasionally to blow something up. It's great because it's free. I haven't been on in probably over a month, but it's about time to fire up the impulse engines and warp drive just to have a look around and make a little more progress on missions. I also have crap gear and haven't done any end-game at all. There's lots of overhead for me in STO, just not making any 1 game my focus at this time.

Cool. :)

One more question; I found that at the end of the game, the bat'leth was a very good weapon to use for ground missions, especially against the Borg. Is that still true, or did they nerf that?

I still have this installed but haven't played in a long time. Maybe I'll roll a new toon some day soon.

I was so disappointed in this game that I even threw out my discs.  It was one of two games I had been waiting my whole life to play.  Both disappointed me, but this one much more so.  :'(

I think it was the space travel that was a general turn off to most ST fans.  Not only was it not multi-player ship crews (really kind of essential to really feel like ST - after all, that's where 90% of the action and plot development happened through the shows and movies), but it was the most reverse-immersion clinical math book looking space nav I've ever seen.
Joe is absolutely correct.

All right, if your mom asks, you tell her I read you the riot act
and I took away your xBox.

No idea about the answer to this either. I would venture a guess that there has been some fleshing out of weapons since then, but who knows?

So... you're saying the game is much better than launch and when it first went f2p?  If so, I'll patch it up and give it another look.
