Another helpful post from the folks at oldrepublic.net
Breakdown of each companion per class and ranks the gift types by how much a particular companion likes that type of item.

Enjoy!

Do you know if you get extra or more affection points if you give a companion a gift over the current rank? Or can you? I haven't been able to find anything about that.
Thanks!

I don't know about that. I wouldn't imagine you can but I don't really know.

Even though "Favorite" to me means favorite, as in the best, I am assuming since he uses the same Green/Blue/Purple color scheme, that "Love" is the best.
And looking at Mako and Torian, who I have maxed affection for, the ones he marked "Love" were the ones that I recall netting me the most affection per item.

A few more insights into the companion gift system:
Green, blue, purple affect the base amount of points an item gives. Rank 1 greens give 54 at the highest; a purple gives 3 or 4 times that.
Some companions really like certain items, and others don't. There are many which won't raise affection at all with certain companions.
Every 2000 points of affection represents a "tier" where the gifts lose some of their efficacy; I believe the reward gets halved. This puts an emphasis on conversation points over gift points for later levels, as you lose value on certain gift ranks. Rank 5 will pretty much always be good, however, they are expensive.
Companions will give quests in rest areas (cantinas and your ship) as they gain affection. These are different for different companions, but happens rather frequently (about every 200 - 300 affection or so). I know that I've probably gotten a level's worth from Lt. Iresso (he's at 7490/10000 as of last).
Companions gain different amounts of conversation affection, depending on when you get them. My standard gain breakdown is:
Qyzen (level 9): 15
Tharan (~level 25): 21
Zenith (~level 34): 40
Lt. Iresso (~level 41): 55
Nadia (~level 44): 102
That's standard: there are options they really like which reward more. I got 273 affection for Nadia off one choice, and a 250 for Iresso. Make sure your companions are out at all times when doing conversation; swap in ones that you want to gain with. If you lose points, there's usually a different choice to gain, though some companions will be in conflict with your alignment - don't bring them when morality comes into play!
Why is affection important? It increases efficiency from crafting gathering, which reduces craft times. It also increases their critical chance (i.e. getting an augment slot or returning extra rewards). This will be a big deal at 50 - crafting my Rakata bracers will be expensive, but I will want an augment slot if I can get it, and reducing the amount of times I have to craft it to get it will be very important.

This is really cool, thanks for the find. I liked guessing for the first couple of times and then it just got to the point of saying forget it and sticking with one thing. Thanks again.

I like this so much that I stickied it and also made a special linky for sharing it (it's today's link of the day in our in-game motd).

I think it's a lot easier to look at a little chart with stars and "x"s on it than this "Like", "Love" stuff:

This is a great chart, however, it does not account for the player's sex. For example, check out torhead's page for Andronikos:
http://www.torhead.com/npc/hbyXfsy
Under the companion gifts section, you will see that there are many types of gifts that are different depending on your character's sex. No matter how many times I flirt with Mako, she ain't haven' it!

Not sure how accurate these charts are.
I just gave Elara Dorne a lvl 3 "Courting" artifact and she politely remarked that it was a nice though but....no thanks.
I got nothing out of it. And yet the charts say she loves courting artifacts.
Wasted. Because Kira lubs those from Ravenblu.

The full post above before it was edited to just be the charts had a footnote that courting items sometimes do nothing depending on sex of character and sex of companion.
I guess she just doesn't dig chicks in that way
