Big computer trouble...need direction please.

Pie:
I was finishing up last night and without ANY warning my computer froze up. I was unable to do anything so manually powered it off.  Gave it a few minutes and then tried to turn it on.  The fan started it's usual "blast" but then it didn't stop and it didn't turn on.  I manually turned it off again.  I gave it a little longer this time and same thing when I tried to turn it on.  Went to bed and upon arising today the same thing. Nothing.  I got my laptop I am on now out and googled it and as a result disconnected the power cord from the back, waited and then reconnected it.  That resulted in the same constant fan but nothing more.  I read some really scary stuff about bad motherboards etc.  I am totally lost with any hardware.  My computer guy is slammed with out of town responsibilities and I can't bring myself to even call him at this time.  My tower is huge and what I need is a housecall.  I could  potentially disconnect everything to take it somewhere but I would need help setting it back up.  I have no idea how to locate a new reliable, knowledgeable, and honest computer person for help.  I don't know enough to adequately protect myself from being ripped off so I am feeling slightly paranoid.  Any advice or even reassurance about what to do or where to go at this point would be appreciated.

Madmartigan:
Did you get any noises from the case before the freeze?

Any pops?

My first thoughts at possible problems is a bad psu (power supply), bad motherboard or some bad/loose internal cable connections.

Hardware problems are so hard for me to diagnose from across the country.

Ooh, new thought.

Pie, are you comfortable enough to open up your case and possibly post a picture or 2 of the motherboard?

No need to remove any components, just as is pictures.

Sometimes there are visual cues, like a melted capacitor, on bad motherboards.

Best buy / geek squad is an option, but I've never really dealt with them. If your fan is coming on and your having to manually power down means that you are getting some power. Madd is right it could be your Power Supply or it could be your motherboard. Like madd said it's so hard to really tell anything concerning hardware with out laying hands on it.

I would fix it for free/parts, but I'm not there. Be very wary of small PC shops because it's really hard to say if they are reputable or not, that's why I would suggest best buy / geek squad since at least the company is legit.

Martini:
Oh dear.. :( Sorry to hear Pie! I hope you get it figured out asap and that it's not a big issue... I'm no help but best of luck! <3
