Blue screen...
« on: August 02, 2012, 11:12:12 PM »
Okay, so I'm getting really worried right about now.

My laptop just blue screened on me twice about 20 minutes ago. I do regular scans and defrags with my laptop. My laptop isn't even that old, maybe a year-ish (give or take 3-4 months).

The only thing that I could think that was causing it was that I was trying to upload 3 videos to Youtube that I made for Martini. So I'm kind of dumbfounded as to what caused the bluescreen if it wasn't just the laptop blowing itself up from the amount of uploading it was doing.

Simple... it's Windows.

Now that I'm done stating the obvious and stupid answer, I honestly don't know what's wrong with your laptop. It's possible it could have been the videos that caused it to lock up and crash or it was something else. I'm sure one of the more technical minded folks can help.

did you write down the error code displayed? probably not i know it goes quick, but if you did or it happens again just google the code and youll know what caused it.
As Nightsong stated its windows, and blue screens are a prerequisite. I really wouldnt worry too much though unless it continues frequently happening.

Yea, you really should try and see if you can find the exact error code and do a google search on it. Many folks claim the BSOD is common, I disagree. Though at least they are somewhat expected.

When the Mac gives me a gray screen of death I rail against apple folks who claim it never happens. For some of us power users . . doesn't matter when machine you use . . you will break them all at some point.

ANYWAYS

Common occurraces of BSOD can be attributed to the following:
(This may not be an issue for you, those error code really help out)

- Overheating event: Dust or air flow restriction is generally a number one cause
- Video Driver event: New drivers, or ones prone to having errors cause this a lot as well
- Bad Memeory event: No matter how new, sometimes you just get some bad luck. Depending on what you are doing, you may not see bad memory unless it's really exercising the amount you have
- Hard reset event: If you don't shut windows down properly, it's possible there is a corrupted file somewhere causing you the issue.
- Recent software update or install: If you've never seen this happen before . . .what was the last driver, software, or anything you did to update the computer recently. If you can get those blue screens to happen regularly by doing a specific thing, and it never happened before, it's likely hardware died or something was installed since last time that is causing the failure. May need to use one of those restore points to go back to when it was good and try to figure out the culprit.
- Overclocking: This is generally what gets my machine. I can't help but try and push out double the speed on my machine . . but if I tweak it poorly . . it ends up blue screening a lot ;)

A lot of the above are common thing I've found in the past. You number one best bet is to find that code so you know where the problem occurred.

Good luck

What Steinbjorn and Makani said.

With Laptops...  the biggest issue with laptops is overheating and airflow. I know while people love the portability you really should have a cooling platform for any laptop you use(such as this or this), ESPECIALLY for gaming(or anything graphically and/or CPU intensive). If you do not, then in my opinion, you are playing roullette until something fries inside.

But as mentioned before, get that BSOD code and we can help you to research it. Unless they are different code/gives you a different code each time. Then you may have major issues.

Eww BSOD...Could definitely be a heat thing with a laptop, but here's a quick way to find the info that you need to find out if it's hardware related or if it's kernel or app side.

If you haven't already, right click My Computer (I'm gonna assume you're using Windows 7. Tell me if I'm wrong), select properties, click Advanced System Settings, then click Settings for Startup and Recovery.

Change "Write Debugging Info" to "Small Memory Dump (128kb)" and make the small dump directory the following: %SystemRoot%\Minidump
(If it's already set to that, fantastic. If not, you may need to go to %systemroot% and create a new file called Minidump -- you can type %systemroot% in your path bar of windows explorer, or just navigate to C:\Windows)

If all of this is already in place, then you should be able to find the .dmp file that your last BSOD created in the Minidump folder (if there's nothing in there, you'll have to wait (or replicate) the BSOD so it can write a .dmp to that file we just created).  If you have that .dmp file, you can go download WinDBG from Microsoft from here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/hh852363

If you feel less than comfortable working with Windbg, you can always attach the .dmp file here and I'll take a look.

Best of luck to ya,

I would send the .dmp file... But it's saying I don't have permission to do it, even though I'm the administrator on this laptop, went in and gave myself permission (which was completely arbitrary in my opinion), and still am not able to attach it. This BSOD is really pissing me off.

Ugh, yeah, I hate how, even if you're admin (and the only user on the system, really) you sometimes have to go into the Advanced options of the permissions window and click on Take Ownership.

I don't have my laptop in front of me right now (as you may be able to tell from the cellphone misspellings), so I can't type up a walkthrough of how to get there, but if you right click the minidump file, go into properties, security (i think), then permissions, the advanced option should be in there and you can take ownership of the file.

Dumb, I know, but such is Windows sometimes.

No worries! :) I'm going to a wedding soon, so I won't be able to even get back to my laptop until maybe, like, 10 PM EST.

If you right click My Computer and select Properties, you can go to the Advanced tab, or if you have Win 7 Advanced System Properties. Under Startup and Recovery hit Settings...  Make sure Automatically restart is unchecked.  Now your computer won't quickly restart before you can get the error code.

Hopefully this helps in the process of getting rid of your BSODs.
