Confused: Account Banned

So yesterday I get an email on my phone talking about my account being closed and I just chalked it up to another spam email.  Today while logging in to battle net I figured I'd check and sure enough it was closed.

So I go back and read the email in more detail and they have banned my account for exploiting the economy.  But it gets better!  My account has not been active for over a year and a half.  I am still waiting on an explanation but this is crazy.  I am not a big WoW fan any more or anything, but I did plan on buying the expansion and probably leveling another character like I have for all the others. 

Oh and I should include, I did not buy nor sell gold.  Gold was so easy to make, plus I was an early bird so selling all the herbs on the AH was easy money.  I did have a fairly large bank roll, but I am one of those who played the AH well.

That is crazy. My account has been closed for over a year now as well and I keep receiving emails from Blizzard saying similar things that I chalk up to spam as well.

My account was hacked a couple years ago and the only way I found out was my friend saw my character running around. The bonus is that rather than selling all my gear, the guy just kept getting him better gear. So once I found out and told Blizzard they gave me 14 days to play and I was surprised to see my character had better gear than when I closed my account. Unfortunately the 14 days still did nothing to keep me interested in WoW sio I changed my account info and passwords and closed it again, hopefully this time for good.

I have not played WoW in 4 years and 2 and half years ago my account was banned for spamming gold messages in Ironforge.

I have kept an authenticator on my account since it got stolen a couple years back and I had to jump through hoops to get it reactivated.

I thought about the authenticator at first but like I said it has been over a year and a half with no active subscription or game time, and to get banned like that?  I could completely understand if someone hacked the account, reactivated and was exploiting then, but to be banned while the account is not active seems weird.

One of the guys I use to play with got perma-banned, also for "exploiting the economy." Basically, he was also playing the auction house where he would buy items and put them up for more gold.  He also never bought or sold gold, but that apparently was enough, though his sub was active when this happened

I haven't played WoW in years either.  When I got D3 I logged on to find about 10 characters I've never heard of between lvl 1-10 in WoW.

I don't have a smart/iphone for that.  Well I did until my baby wrecked it. I'm not paying over $20 for a new authenticator (shipping to Canada....)

Your account was compromised. Regardless of how long you have been playing. At some point in your gaming lifetime you attempted to log into a website that was not the proper website it appeared to be. Phishing websites have become insanely convincing. If you don't use unique passwords this can happen. If you do use unique passwords then they simple may have had your info SINCE the last time you played but not gotten around to you.

This is super easy to prevent. The authenticator is bulletproof no matter what anyone tells you.  Six bucks for a keychain, or free on your smart phone.

Also, if you just contact support, they will repair everything, and help you secure your account. The gold farming industry in some parts of the world is literally a multi-billion dollar industry with hundreds of thousands of employees.

There is a good possibility that your account has been hacked.  It seems to be happening to a lot of our old members who haven't played in a long time.

It happened to my account in my unsubscribed 2-year gap between play sessions.  Except when I stopped playing there were no authenticators, so when the guy hacked me he also put an authenticator on my account so it took me hours on the phone to get my account back.
