Announcing TG Discord Chat Server
After further discussion with some members and the council, I gave the go ahead to create an official Discord server for TG. This server will be used to host chat and messaging services for our members in hopes of bringing members across divisions and general membership together for additional fun. I made this decision primarily as a result of the realization that members were already using newer tools such as Line and Discord to fulfill this need. I had previously help off endorsing anything official like this after consultation with the council and some members as we felt it might fracture the guild into different tools and take away from the importance of our forums and TeamSpeak servers. Once we took a broader look however, it was apparent that the cat was already out of the bag.
With the implementation of this Discord server, it should provide a common place for these types of conversations and hopefully members will gravitate towards using the TG discord server over other servers and tools such as Line. What Discord is for TG
This server provides great chat services. It has clients for windows, web, Android, and iOS. Using any of these mechanisms, you will be able to join the server and chat with other people to get know each other better, form up adhoc groups in a number of games, or just chit chat. We have created a number of channels specific to some games we play for convos specifically about those games, but I would expect that most discussion will occur in the general channel.
The general channel in chat will be for everyone, member and non-members. It will be a place for us to allow individuals interested about our guild to come in and chat with us that might not be inclined to do so in voice comms. After talking with numerous people, we have come to the conclusion that we have a number of members and recruits that just don't do the voip thing unless absolutely necessary such as raids. Even then, they only listen. With the ability to chat without talking, we are hoping these types of people will gain a new voice and be more social with us. What Discord is NOT for us
Discord is billed as VoiP for games. However, at this time we will be using only the chat related functionality as the voip does not provide the level of functionality we have in TS3 that will be required for future games. We will continue to use TS3, but we can link the TS information in Discord to allow for easier access to it.
Discord is not meant to replace our forums. Our forums are great. They keep this history of TG. They are fully searchable and available to everyone. All important Guild and Division information will continue to remain in the forums. Important information that should be maintained and shared should remain in the forums. Post to the forums, and provide a quick link in chat in Discord. SWTOR did similar things during conquest in Line. It works very well. I am sure we will all get better at what should be where over time, but for now the forums are our archive. Discord will be great for things like "hey guys, Im wanted to play again, what are people playing right now?" and just general BS types of convos.Discord and Server Information
Our server is called Guardian HQ. You can use the following invite to get hooked into the server: https://discord.gg/0brLumBr4YNWYgwf
Feel free to share this with members and non-members alike. Once entered and if you are a member, msg me or any of the marked moderators to assign you the proper member status. Mods will be listed in the user list in the right side pane (default).
The #welcome channel is a read only channel that will contain important links and information.
The #general is the main channel for chit chat and socialization. Lets try to keep it PG-13 in chat as we have all kinds of members and we want to project a proper image to people who might be trying us out.
As I mentioned earlier, we have # channels for each of our divisions and main games. Lets try to keep things in those channels specific to those games and normal socialization in the general channel. There is also a #membersonly channel in case more sensitive items need to be discussed. The nice thing about discord is that it makes it easy to work with multiple channels and even multiple servers.
