Dark and Light! It's back!
« on: August 02, 2016, 08:51:07 AM »

Ten years ago, I was in an Alpha for a new kind of MMO, a sandbox MMO.  It was incredible.  It never released, was cancelled, and disappeared.  10 years later, and apparently they've remade it in UE4 and are releasing this year???  Madness!

I remember this scam...lol

I was a pioneer, but got my package for free somehow. I remember those poor people that paid for that. Don't recall if they ever got a refund or not.

Is this a fan project or something official?  Just a facebook page and no website seems a bit odd.

Dark and Light was bought out by Snail Games (Chinese Company, Makers of Age of Wushu) back in 2011, and has been rebuilt from the ground up using the Unreal Engine 4. Snail games spend millions on it fixing and finishing the game.

Can't find a website because it is in Chinese. But it is Official.

From the website :

- Development of the game started way back in 2005.

- The game is apparently over 40,000 square kilometers, 40 times the size of Everquest. In this huge open world, there will be 10 races separated into 3 factions. Of course, these races will be available for players to choose. They include humans, elves, beastmen, dwarves, fairies, demons, dragons and more.

- When players create a character, the system will generate an unique growth path for them. All players will get to try out the various battle and life classes at first in order to allow them to choose a class most suited for them to progress. Eventually, a well-trained character will be a sword-wielding warrior who is able to throw fireballs in the middle of battle!

- Other than the battle classes, there will be a variety of life classes for players to play as. Having your own shop (like a real actual shop space), going on a trade expedition, a skilled blacksmith, a world-renown herbalist, a wandering storyteller, a knowledgeable historian, a dragon trainer (gasp!)… All these and more is possible in Darkness and Light! These unique classes will cater for players who are not so much into battles.

- When players eventually gain a huge amount of honor and recognition, the kingdom will bestow him with a title and a piece of land. With the piece of land, players can build a grand castle from scratch, eventually turning the areas around it into a town! If the player is lucky, there will be a time where a gold mine is discovered in the mountains within his territory, which can be farmed by the citizens of the town.

- There will be an active and live weather change system. Snow, fog, sunny, rain, hailstorm… all these will have an effect on the world. For example, if a snowstorm suddenly strikes, trading markets in town will close shop early. When players use a massive AOE ice skill during such a time, a mega blizzard will be formed!

- All players will be within the same server. Other than just plain grinding for experience points, activities like taking part in political campaigns and even trading will nab players with points.

- The game will be  B2P with DLC support for the west

- Game is coming out in the East this year and in the West hopefully next year.

10 years ago there were 4 or 5 games like this 'slated' to come out and never did or got re-tooled into one of the many cookie-cutter MMO's that died 6 months after release. I'm not holding my breath until it's at least beta playable.

Snail Games Associate Producer "Horsejoke" took to Reddit earlier this week to answer five questions about Dark & Light. Topics included why Snail is keeping the original name and logo, how movement and combat will work, the three faction system, dragons as mounts and progression in the game.

Mmorpg.com recently did an interview with Product Manager Shen Yan to learn more about Dark & Light.

Snail hasn't been giving out much info on this game, but mmorpg.com got some game playing time with the devs and showed off some gameplay.

This looks kind of like Darkfall and so do some of the systems, funny that Ripper is doing the video's since he originates from Darkfall. Maybe the devs are people from Darkfall, or people who liked the game. Interested to see the progress of this game, spells look cool.

Snail has changed this game from a MMO, to a survival Sandbox. Essentially it's a fantasy Ark but with more bugs, less optimisation and content.

It's really in early alpha and needs more time to mature.

looks interesting... but kind of like Ark from a year or so ago. If it super sales to less than 10 bucks I'll try it before a launch, but probably not unless that happens.

May check it out after some bugs are cleared. $20 isn't too bad.
