I haven't seen anything concrete but from my googling it appears they will have some sort of multiplayer but not for release. I know the galacticpedia (or whatever they are calling it) will persist throughout the game for everyone playing but actual interactions I have not found any info on.

I believe you are correct in that it will have multiplayer but possibly not at launch.  They really haven't given away many of the finer details but have shown pretty much the same gameplay over and over.  Regardless what we do know and have seen I really like.  The exploration and naming finds is pretty cool.  I just hope we don't see planets named [insert inappropriate slang] Planet.

So I had no idea this was for anything outside the PS4. I discovered that it's on Steam only yesterday, so now I'm suddenly interested :) I believe I'll probably hold off on purchasing until the multiplayer component is put in. The tech they have for this game is quite interesting, especially the illusion of no load screens.

Can we get some final recommendations or warnings about this? As most of us probably know, the release of No Man's Sky has been rocky at best. Despite this, it's a title I still want badly because the description of game play speaks to me. My gut tells me it's a decent game, just not for $60 US.

On the other hand, if you don't expect it to be more than it is, if you treat it like a normal game and not a "best game ever" mindset, is it a good game and worth the money and time?

Dak, I know you spent a lot of time with it and liked it, how do you feel? Anyone else want to chime in?

The first day was "Wow, this is amazing" after that... meh. Minecraft in space without the option to build. Just destroy. The aliens feel like props (don't move, don't even feel alive other than their lips move when they talk to you). All the in-depth "you can befriend a species and they will help you" is bull. I spent the better part of a week doing nothing but learning words and could understand approximately 50% of their language with no meaningful perks.

The two best descriptions I have heard are "A mile wide, an inch deep" and "900 channels with nothing on".

This isn't the game that was marketed to us. With all that said, it was a fun little game. But I don't feel like it is worth $60. It is worth the price of an indie game $20-30 (which is what it is). I'm a bit bitter because the whole pirate/alien allies/ships that are actually different are why I bought into it. None of that is in game to the level that they described. I didn't expect multi, they were always clear it isn't a multiplayer game. I didn't expect to build anything, they were clear it isn't minecraft in space. But they did market more depth, and they didn't deliver.

My rant aside, it is a game worth playing. It is cool, just not $60 cool.

Update 1.3 is now out. First iteration of a sort of multi-player functionality and other changes to address major-complaints.

And, the game is on sale for a pretty reasonable $24 US.

I recommend anyone with an interest clear the calendar, buy the game and play it keeping a close on on the refund meter (not literally). I'm thinking this game is reaching critical mass. If the developer doesn't see sales soon they could stop development. At this stage it might be worth the sale price and some decent sales may encourage this game to achieve what it is capable of.

That is a bit of a stretch though.

only a couple hours in so far... but it feels like a 3d version of starbounds starting planet at this point.

Found out a few mats that make life away from the ship easier, and caves reset your thermal regs. But watch out for the starting planets attacking animal(s) in caves. That's where they hide on mine... Also get your scanner up and going asap to find the right mats easier.

It is a much better game now.  Still no real multiplayer but this is the game they should have delivered at launch.  I am not sure I have ever seen a games reviews be so opposite from a year ago to now.  I have to give the devs credit for sticking with it.

Maybe I'll have to check it out again some day. I was disappointed with the game at launch but if it's totally turned around it may be worth a revisit.
