Title: Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen
Post by: Martini on April 09, 2016, 12:54:21 PM
A few of us were chatting about this game last night in Teamspeak and I guess I was nominated to make a thread about it. :) Pantheon takes place on a world called Terminus, where many different races have sort of "shipwrecked" together and brought their beliefs and way of living with them. You may have heard of Pantheon back when it was in Kickstarter in 2014. While the Kickstarter did not reach its goal, the developers have continued to work on making Pantheon a reality, and have opened their website up for pledges. PantheonMMO.com (http://www.pantheonmmo.com/) If you're interested, you can pledge HERE (https://www.pantheonmmo.com/join/pledge/).

You can read on the website what they call "The Pantheon Difference (http://www.pantheonmmo.com/game/pantheon_difference/)" See spoiler below.
An MMO Evolved
Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen will likely be a fundamentally different game compared to what you may have experienced playing other modern MMORPGs. From the moment you log in you will notice that the game is more social and has an emphasis on cooperative play. The monsters are often tougher and exploration is more involved. You will need friends in the game and your reputation can either help you progress or hinder it. Death in-game is meaningful and you’ll want to avoid it when possible. You’ll learn your surroundings and the lay of the land, spending meaningful time in each area and not just running through as quickly as possible to collect ten hides. You will need strategy, cunning and endurance to uncover all that Pantheon has to offer. You will find yourself in group and guild chats as you strategize or even just to pass the time between battles. Pantheon is social, thought-provoking, and the memories from your experiences in Terminus will last a lifetime.

Atmosphere/Climate System
One of Pantheon’s tenets is ‘Engage the World!’ When we talk about being a PvE MMO, our definition of ‘environment’ means a lot more than just fighting NPCs -- players will be contending with the world itself. Some regions will be very hot or cold. Some areas within a zone might be enchanted with complete darkness, or silence (meaning spoken spells won't work), or poison or miasma. Small tornados could travel through a region, compelling players to work their way around them, not through them, lest they take significant damage. Also, certain spells may work better or worse (or even only work) depending on the climate or atmosphere -- for example, a 'Call Lightning' spell could deal more damage than a typical ‘lightning bolt’ spell but could only be cast if there is a storm in the region.

Powerful Spells and Abilities: The Living Codex
In MMOs it is common to find rare items out in the world, by adventuring or by crafting, but abilities and spells are more often learned from trainers or even just given to player when his or her character levels up. In Pantheon, however, many of the more rare and exotic spells and abilities are found not at the local trainer but from a wise sage hiding in the depths of a dungeon or at the top of a remote tower.

Dynamic NPC Encounter Groups
The world is not static and unchanging – every day is not ‘groundhog’ day. Events occur that can completely change the population of a zone or the population of a group of NPCs within a zone (and the rarer the event, the rarer the rewards -- many exotic items can only be obtained when one of these zone events occur). An example: after you kill some key mobs guarding a hill giant camp, this triggers a zone event that loads up an invading force of Storm Giants who then proceed to attack the Hill Giant camp.

NPC Dispositions and Behaviors
An area we have not seen much innovation in MMORPGs, almost since their inception, is the area of NPC AI. What if certain enemies had different “dispositions” that had to be discovered by the player? Many NPCs in Pantheon will have advanced behaviors, like the propensity to flee if possible, or to stand and fight to the end. Some NPCs will be inclined to help other NPCs in the area, while some will not. Some will target certain classes within the group that is attacking them. NPC’s movement speeds may vary if they feel they are outmatched. While it is too early to go into a lot of detail, some of the different dispositions we are working on include: the Alarmist, the Bully, the Craven, the Opportunist, the Protector, and the Strategist.

Colored Mana System
Different classes will use different colors of mana. Some rare abilities, spells, and prayers will use more than one color of mana. These exotic abilities create an opportunity to sub-class your character, allowing players to customize their class to a degree, but without removing the interdependence between classes that is key to group content and building community.

Progeny System
Players will be able to 'retire' high level characters and then create their children as new characters, but these new characters, the 'progeny', will have certain abilities, stats, etc. that make them slightly yet noticeably better than a completely brand new character (but not to the point that it unbalances things).

Situational Gear
In Pantheon, there often won't simply be a weapon or piece of gear that is the absolute best item for your character’s class and level. Instead, many items will be more situational, and the player will need to ask himself, 'where am I?', 'what am I going to fight next?', and 'who in my group is what class, and what items do they have that may help defeat the next encounter?' Items that protect against climates/atmospheres (areas of extreme heat or cold, or disease, or absolute darkness) will often be important. So also will 'bane' items that are especially effective against certain types of mobs (for example, the Undead, or Dragonkind).

The Perception System
One of the most profound things about Pantheon is how we are designing the game from the ground up so that the Environment truly matters – we want players to care about the world they are in, and why things are the way they are. When you think of MMOs, when is the last time you discovered the meaning, or the history, or the secrets of a person, place or event without being told by a text box? What if we’ve conceived of a way to bring players back to exploring because they are compelled by what they see in front of them - not because a blinking light tells them to go there? In Pantheon, Wizards will be able to perceive things that a Warrior cannot. Through prayer, a Cleric may gain insight into an area, or a creature, that a Rogue could never know. Through our perception system, Pantheon will redefine how the game world becomes known, and how players will work together to progress.

The game is still in the early stages, but the devs have release a gameplay video. It's over an hour and half long of them in and actually playing the game together.

There is also a livecast show called Voices of Terminus (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ0BiIpfN9b5kUP8TA9eG1A). I've linked the first episode of the series.

While the game, obviously, has a ways to go for development yet, it may be one you want to keep on your radar, especially if you were a fan of the EQ days of old. I know there was quite a bit of interest just from the group that was chatting about it last night. Stay tuned for what is in store next for Pantheon!

Damn, why Tini, why!!  This could turn out pretty good.  Pledge prices are pretty steep but I am a sucker for supporting games.  Maybe...

I will be granted 50 FREE copies of this game.

We've been a part of this for almost 3 years, and have high expectations for it.

When the beta season(s) begin, I will be posting much more -- And will get copies for anyone in TG that wants to play it!

Also FYI: alpha and beta tests are this year, 2016, and release is planned for 2017. :)

I just backed, the $100 package. The more I hear, the more I think this could actually be exciting and keep my interest. I think most games these days become so boring so fast because everything has to be "figured out". Anything and everything is fine tuned to be a science, but I miss experimenting. I miss adventure and exploring and figuring things out with guildies. The plans they have for weapon type vs mob type to matter (ie blunt weapons vs bone and sharp vs flesh), or spells and abilities that the environment will affect (ie. a silent area disabling "spoken word spells"); THIS is what excites me. Having a game that isn't such a tank and spank snoozefest.

They are also talking about have no "holy trinity", but more of a EQ feel with tanks, heals, dps, cc, puller, etc. I LOVE that each class will bring something truly unique and valued to the party.

Wellzy, Scip, and I brought a dozen or so folks over to The Guardians in Farmville 2015 (Archeage) -- Along with that group was a fella named Shortyrez, who just happens to be the Lead PR fella for Pantheon. He's been an officer of mine in Ceaseless for roughly 8 years, and we have been privy to a lot of cool information!

As for copies, I will have plenty to spare.

We are having a great time on Phinigel server (EQ) and on FFXIV (Ultros) currently -- So we will be set until the release of CU and Pantheon.

WoW! That is really cool, Barlow. Small world.

That is really awesome that you're getting a bunch of copies of the game. I backed it because I wanted to support (and it gives me two copies so I can give one away on stream maybe). Fifty is a lot, that will build quite a good player base right there. :) Keep in touch about this; I'd love to hear more.

I'd be interested in getting into alpha and seeing how the game develops over time. Can't afford those pledge packages as of yet, though. Sad times. Maybe they'll do an alpha key giveaway or I can beg someone for one, when the alpha starts up. :D

The more I read the more I am excited.  Of any of the games I have pledged/kickstarted this one speaks to me the most.  I am really thinking of doing at least the $100 pledge.

Me too, Scootz. I love the PVE focus, the character interdependancy, all the classes. I LOVE EQ and Vanguard, so fingers crossed it's similar to that. I'm at the $150 package right now, but going to upgrade to the Champion tier soon.

Is Pantheon by Brad McQuiad?

EDIT: It is, nice if it makes it to launch and he doesn't go crazy before launch I may buy in :P

Anyone find out if it was true that he just pocketed the crowd funding money? I think he was accused of taking 33-45% of the pot and just paying it to himself.

When the original Kickstarter failed, Brad started taking donations on the Pantheon website.  I think they made about 150k in funding off of the Pantheon website. Then Brad for some strange reason said he needed a 3 month salary in the tune of 45k from Pantheon's own funding campaign, to alleviate personal affairs.

http://segmentnext.com/interstitial.html?return_url=http://segmentnext.com/2014/05/05/pantheon-rise-of-the-fallen-dev-accused-taking-crowd-funds-personal-use/

http://www.pcinvasion.com/pantheon-rise-of-the-fallens-financials-under-scrutiny

To make matters worse non of his staff got paid a dime, so when they all saw him take 45K for personal reasons they were all pissed off and every single one of them quit in protest. That was the first dev team.

Then Brad hired a religious nut to run the game and that turned into a disaster.

The game looked like it was going nowhere but then a miracle happend, he got some angel investors in the tune of millions,  and he hired some of the ex-SOE staff to take over the game. He even hired a new CEO to take over the game and look after the money.

Oh nice. Thanks for the quick description of all the events!

I'll keep an eye on this one. Brad makes some really nice games, but you never really know with him until there's something final in your hands :/

IMO I wish he never let SOE buy Sigil, they had an excellent product that just got thrown under the bus :(

I really hope this game sees launch because he's a great designer but I just don't trust him.  I'd probably donate to the kickstarter except for his 'sorted past'.  I'll be keeping an eye on this tho and likely play if it makes it through development.

SOE is what kept Vanguard alive after Microsoft pulled out of the deal.  They kinda saved his bacon, so to speak.  It had a very rocky start.  Beta near 'launch' they were still completely redoing the starting areas and adding new ones and new races.  It was pretty messy, from what I recall. To this day, I believe that if they'd started with less races and focused on fine tuning what they had at the time, it would have worked out  much better.  Diplomacy was like a last minute add as well.  That being said, I really liked the game and was sad when SOE finally sunsetted it. :(  Had some of the best 'vistas' you'd ever seen in a game due to the nozone stuff.  NB: I did NOT like the corpse runs tho ;p
Title: Re: Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen
Post by: Civenge on May 10, 2016, 06:51:04 PM
Corpse runs make for great mmos though.  And typically you'll have some way to get a corpse back via a special skill at least one class has.  Bring back the Mmo that is more focused on a challenging but fair game play that is more about the leveling process and social(grouping) aspects like Everquest was, in the beginning.  Give me classes that don't completely overlap,  races that actually have racial bonuses that matter and no instant gratification please.

I really just want EQ1 game with modern graphics.   Same classes,  same tradeskills,  but new items and new zone layouts.   Same everything else.   And I mean EQ no later than planes of power Era,  maybe pre Shadows of Luclin.

Til then,  I play P1999.

Oh and don't turn it into current EQ,  like ever. I think rolling a class to max level should be rewarding in of itself, and combined with some raiding,  keep you busy for a few hundred hours per character.   If you want more content don't increase the level cap,  make me want to roll a new class because they are interesting and different. Adding more level cap/Aa's are a bad way to keep a game interesting,  open up gear progression(maybe) or something else but higher levels is a cycle that ruins the experience.  Gear checks can be fine in a way,  if implemented reasonably.

Sorry rant off.

Anyone who's around more and knows the pulse of the guardians have any ideas?

Its early to tell, but I've pledged $150 or was it $200? Either way, I'm hopefully in like Flynn if things keep going well. The community is great so we will definitely be able to find good folks to play with.

from the article...

Quote
The High Fantasy MMO from one of the genre’s founders is attempting to turn back the clock on MMO design. Veteran designer Brad McQuaid and his new company Visionary Realms want to craft the true spiritual successor to EverQuest, a deep and difficult game, at a time when gameplay is being increasingly trivialized and truncated.

McQuaid tried this once before... it was Vanguard, and he sold out when the money from Microsoft dried up because the game wasn't ever going to run on the original XBox.  Who'd he sell to?  The company he'd repeatedly criticized, SOE/Verant.  "Just a publisher" and "no influence on the game" only lasted 6 months... then McQuaid disappeared and the game tumbled down the hill to accessibility and mediocrity.  It was a better game 1.5 years before launch than it was at launch.

I want it to succeed along the lines they're saying, but... there's only a track record that shows it won't be done.  I greatly hope it will suceed.  It's the MMO I want... but, I won't get my hopes up.

Edit: heartwarming sound effect at 12:47

Hey everyone just a quick update, if you want to get alpha access, do it before September 12, they are removing the alpha access packages, here is the info:

Quote
Due to popular demand a new $50 pledge tier will be available September 12th. This new tier will be a bare bones entry level pledge and will provide a single copy of the game at launch, supporter level forum access, the in-game title of Pantheon Explorer, and early name reservation.
In addition to this new tier we will be removing the Knight's ($100) and Patron's ($150) pledges from the store. We are nearing capacity for alpha and access to it at this level is a thank-you to the early adopters. The two tiers being removed will be replaced with similar pledge tiers without alpha access to the game. So if you have been considering one of these tiers, act now before they go away September 12th.

Is that a toupe?  That hair... woof.

Good graphical demo.  Unfortunate that there's no combat or really any animations outside of walking and jumping.

Enough of that garbage.. who the hell is ready for Pantheon? The latest video has finally dug into the pits of EQ and VG feelings for folks, and I am personally stoked!

This video shows off Pantheon's Perception Story Lines. Interacting with the environment can unlock special quest lines and encourages players to to explore their surroundings and perhaps see things that others do not.

So Cohhcarnage spilled the beans on everything on his stream, so the Pantheon devs put out a quick teaser. The new class will be Monk, and they will be showing off the Atmosphere and Acclimation system in the next stream.

https://www.facebook.com/1444194139128455/posts/1930248470523017

What is the Atmosphere and Acclimation system?

There will be certain extreme environments in the game to which you’ll need your character to become acclimated. There will be six at launch: Frigid, Scorching, Toxic, Anaerobic, Pressure, and Wind Shear. Each of those extreme climates will have tiers associated with them corresponding to how punishing they will be to the player. For example, you may be able to survive in a Tier 1 environment without any acclimation, but you would certainly experience some detrimental effects like a weapon or movement speed penalty. The higher the tier the more detrimental and severe the effects would be.

**Lastly there will be no info in the next stream on an alpha or beta as they are still not ready to announce those plans. :'(

It's coming along very slowly, they only have like 20 people working on the game and a limited budget. Brad is hoping to go into Alpha near the end of 2017, and Beta in 2018.

Good news today. Visionary Realms has secured Series A funding for Pantheon. That's usually in the 15-20 million range. This funding will expand the team in almost every department and bring the game into a semi-private pre-alpha state where external testers and focus groups can begin sampling the game.

Next Stream is tomorrow!
Title: Re: Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen
Post by: Requiem on April 27, 2017, 09:26:19 PM
If you missed the stream, you can check it out here.

Highlights of the Stream

Climate/Acclimation/Infusions:

- While under the effects of an extreme Frigid climate, your movement speed is reduced, the edges of your screen are blurred, you take damage, and temporarily lose endurance.

- Some areas will have a combination of multiple climates at once.

- There are 5 different tiers of Infusions to help you overcome extreme climates.

- Infusions can be applied to your head, chest, arms, hands, legs, and feet.

- Higher tier infusions are harder to acquire.

- Higher tier infusions overwrite lower tiers.

- Infusions last indefinitely (even after death) until you equip a different infusion.

- Infusions can be crafted. Some special infusions may be only acquired through crafting.

Player Corpses:

- When you loot your corpse, your items are automatically equipped.

- Upon death, clicking "Release" brings you to the zone entrance with none of your gear. (subject to change)

- You cannot loot someone else's corpse.

- You can drag someone else's corpse with consent.

Perception:

- The perception system can allow you to determine a mob's disposition before engaging it. Otherwise, it will have to be discovered through trial-and-error by the player.

- Quests made available by the perception system are not focused on being a primary source of XP.

Combat:

- There are different animations for in-combat and out-of-combat meditation.

- You cannot change memorized abilities during combat.

- Some spells are instant-cast and can be cast while on-the-move, while others take time to cast and the caster must remain stationary.

- If a level 50 character casts a buff on a level 5 character, the effects of that buff will be scaled down so that it is not overpowered.

- Some abilities complement each other when used together.

- There is a chance that a Feign Death attempt can fail.

- XP earned from kills is divided equally among all group members. (subject to change)

I hope so, I wouldn't even consider playing it with CRs.  I remember too many times dying in a bad place and running back, dying, running back, dying ad nauseum until I could literally scream.  I'd rather take the xp debt hit, but not lose items.  losing items would totally suck.  this isn't the 90s and i don't want to recreate that time ;p  i can go find a MUD instead LOL.

I know Brad and the Devs want to have a light death system, but the vast majority of VIP's (aka the Whales) are frothing at the mouth for harsher death penalties and eliminating the convenience that limits broader player interaction, community and player reputation. Time will tell who will win out and whether they have a mandate to include such things.

- The devs want you to incur a xp debt when you die, that you have to pay off, rather than die and lose lvl's.

- Also the devs want to have regional auction houses.

The Pantheon team is at TwitchCon. They had a stream today and showed off more of the game. They also announced that pre-alpha will be here in time for the holidays. So backers who pay $1,000 or more (or $100 a month) will be able to play the game soon. Also Pre-Alpha would be getting removed from the pledges in two weeks.

i think it's outrageous that games are doing these "founder" packs or investments into their game. Do they give these investing players kickbacks or returns of sales or anything? Say what you want about the big corporations like EA/ActivisionBlizzard/SOE, atleast they spend their own $$$ creating the game. Sorry for the random rant.

Nobody knows when Crowfall is going to release. It looks like they have hit a snag as we have been waiting for patch 5.3 for months now.

As for testing, the game is on the last legs of the test cycle before the Jesus patch. So there is nothing big going on from the players side. Once 5.3 hits almost everything about the details of the game will be changing. Class and races, new skill trees, sieges working to semi working. New and better looking environments. Total revamp of the skill bars and how they work.

I think it's like 70 bucks now to get into testing for Crowfall.

Visionary Realms is offering a new special Pax Pledge Tier worth $1,000. It’s similar to the regular-flavor $1000 tier, with a few extra perks, including pre-alpha access to let you hop into the game in May.

But if that is too rich for your blood, VR is having a contest. The studio is giving away five such $1000 packages during Pax East. All you have to do is sign up for their newsletter to be entered. I think it's for US residents only.

If you are interested in the new Pax Pledge Tier, or want to sign up for the contest you can check out the link below.

VR had a meet and greet at the Asgard Irish Pub & Restaurant in Boston on April 5th from 8:30pm est to closing. Devs who attended where :

Brad “Aradune” McQuaid

Chris “ Joppa” Perkins

Tim “Convo” Walthen

Tod “Zippyzee” Curtis

Benjamin “Machial” Dean

David “Roenick” Schlow

Lynn “Henchman9” Ashworth

The streamer Bazgrim had a 30 min stream at the meet and greet that you can check out here :

During the stream Bazgrim talked about the first day @ PAX East and met up with the Community and Developers later in the evening to have a nice cold Dwarven Ale.

The biggest announcement during the Stream came from Joppa himself “Bard`s” might make it to Launch! They are working hard to make this happen, but it’s a big MAYBE. Still that news of the Bard was highly received and got a lot of people excited. Bards are definitely one of the most anticipated classes for Pantheon.

Bazgrim also posted a Vlog about the meet and greet, that you can watch if your interested :

On Saturday April 7th, Brad Mcquiad had a panel with other industry vets to talk about how players shape games. So most of it was non-pantheon related stuff.

But Brad did announce during the panel the planned time frames for Alpha & Beta. Alpha should start at the end of 2018, with a beta sometime in 2019. These time frames are just a rough estimate.

Word on the street is that VR is planing to have 30 zones for launch (That includes dungeons), and they will be 2x to 3x the size of a regular zone in WOW.

Visionary Realms had a stream yesterday with CohhCarnage. It featured the new class Dire Lord ( like a blood mage tank ), and new areas.

What did everyone think of the stream ? How would you rate the game's progress? What things did you like, or would want to see added/removed/changed from the game in the future?

Well as long as there's a diverse skill system or player class I'm good. Cohhcarnage on the other hand, deserves something, more spectacular, than a gravestone.

Another stream. Head developer of Pantheon Chris Perkins invited a couple of WOW streamers to test out the game. They didn't do so hot. They died over and over again...lol

They used dev tools to get back into the game. But normally if you die, you lose xp, and your corpse, plus all the gear on you, and you have to find your corpse to get your gear back.
