It's not the last day of the sale, but it is the last day for adding starship manufacturers, and last but not least is ol' Drake Interplanetary. The verse's leading manufacturer of piracy vessels rugged and affordable vehicles  ::) doesn't have a new offering but as with the other manufacturers, their whole lineup is on sale -- well, except for two limited variants, the Dragonfly Yellowjacket and the Caterpillar Pirate Edition.

Speaking of the Cat, if you've been wanting one, this is your time to grab one. It's a really unique ship, is flyable in-game, and despite the fact that they still haven't said a damned word about its eventual modules, I think it's a strong favorite to be the most versatile ship in Star Citizen. If I had the cash, I'd be buying one today, no question.

Perhaps more important for everyone is the fact that all three of the Cutlass variants (Black, Red, and the usually unavailable Blue) are up for sale. The Cutlass Black rework is complete and it is FANTASTIC. It's bigger, it has both a ramp and a pair of big side doors, there's a sealed door between the cockpit/crew area and the cargo area, and it's got an impressive weapon loadout. As far as I'm concerned, they knocked it out of the park. At the $100 price point the Cutlass is #1. It can fight, it can haul cargo, it can do light salvage, it can REDACTED, PIRACY IS NAUGHTY - ED, it's a swiss army ship. "That's great, Jer, but why is it so important?" you might be thinking. Well, because I can guarantee the price of the Cutlass line is going up when alpha 3.0 goes live. There's no way they can sell the reworked Cutlass at $100, it's just too good, and they're too skilled at devouring money. Get off the fence, the Cutlass is worth it!

Today's ATV focuses on the new Cutlass rework and nothing else. It's a good look at why I'm kind of gushing about the Cutlass above, but it's disappointing that we didn't hear anything about Cat modules, or the Herald and data running gameplay which could have dovetailed nicely into the land claim license stuff as a fast ship may be the difference between getting your dream parcel of land or having to go out and find a second choice (check out the forum thread on our Monday land claim discussion for more info).

Today is also the first day for discounted starter packages. Got a friend you've been trying to get into the game? Point them to the sale this weekend and give them my referral code!

Finally, as a special treat for the Star Citizen community, every citizen is being encouraged to vote on the next Drake ship. The options made available are an entry-level solo salvage ship (code name: Vulture), a multi-crew exploration ship that's basically the Drake version of the Connie Aquila (code name: Corsair), and a scout carrier/mobile base (code name: Kraken) which is CLEARLY the only sane choice here. I mean, I pray the Vulture gets made because every occupation deserves a starter craft and salvage is no exception, but read this description of the Kraken and tell me you're not already trying to figure out what you could melt to get one:

Quote
Drake’s capital ship entry, space to park and store a few medium ships (up to Freelancer-sized) and transport them around the verse. Serves as a mobile truck stop in function with a small hub of stores (some less than legit) to help restock.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? TAKE MY MONEY (oh wait, they already have  :-[ ) Read more and place your vote here.

Buccaneer --  $110 (What if you had a ton of weapons, big engines, and a large dumpster to build a ship to fight a Super Hornet)
Caterpillar --  $295 (Someday this will be the most versatile ship in the game, but another event passes with no module news)
Cutlass Black --  $100 (So, so worth the $100, even if you're not planning on being a pirate, which you're not because it's not allowed)
Cutlass Red --  $120 (Ambulance version should be solid, I expect it to get better in the reworked (bigger) chassis)
Cutlass Blue --  $150 (Police/militia variant, SC equivalent of a Ford Crown Vic Police Edition with several machine guns bolted to it)
Dragonfly Black --  $35 (Not the fastest or most agile of the bikes, but solid, armed, and can carry 2 people or 1 plus a little cargo)
Herald --  $85 (Picture an FBI surveillance van bolted to a huge jet engine and that's the Herald)

Check out the discounted starter package sale here!

Thanks for the great daily recaps on this, Jer. Especially helpful for a newbie like me. The Cutlass Black really appeals to me for an all purpose ship. Would there be a strong argument for upgrading to the Blue?

I would say no, especially if what you want is an all purpose ship as the Blue focuses in on militia/police/bounty hunting.

I do also want to say that the Black is definitely a Jack of all trades, master of none, so a Super Hornet will out dogfight it, a Hull will carry more cargo, etc. That said, if you want versatility, the Black is your ship.

I'll start by saying thanks to Jer for the awesome updates and insight on the Anniversary Sale.

I'm not saying I've decided to melt my stuff or anything but, hipothetically speaking... ::)

I have:
  • An Aurora LN starter package
  • An LTI Anvil Terrapin
  • An LTI Drake Cutlass Black

The Terrapin + Cutlass would amount to $295 after melting. That's equivalent to options like:
  • A 60 month Hull C + A 60 month Argo Cargo or Dragonfly + $5 in credits - AKA The Moving Company
  • A 60 month Prospector + 60 month Herald + 60 month Hull A + $10 in credits - AKA The Startup Specialist
  • A 60 month Caterpillar - AKA The Dedicated Hauler

I can always use my Aurora to fly cheap and still defend myself a little while doing it, but although I do expect to do some fighting because it's unavoidable AND fun, I believe I'll have a blast out of exploring, supporting, trading, discovering. Establishing a steady source of income will enable us to afford more resources(ships, land, insurance, better items, fuel, etc).

Do you think any of those choices has any merits? According to your point of view of course.

Thanks in advance fellow Guardians for your input.

Yes, this is the way I'm leaning only because I'm not yet sure what role I want to play in the game/org yet.  I do have to say, though, that I'm intrigued by bounty hunting quite a lot.  Interdiction piques my interest as well, but from what I understand we really don't yet know how that will play out in game.  I've also considered the prospector for the early cash flow?

At this point, just looking for something better than a basic starter ship to get going.  Looking forward to learning more from you all.

The Prospector/Herald/Hull A combo is pretty good, but honestly if it were me, I'd stick with the Terrapin and the Cutlass. If I hadn't taken the leap to the Hammerhead I was absolutely going to get a Terrapin as part of my melting, that ship is super high on my wishlist, and obviously I think the Cutlass is pretty terrific.

Yeah, I believe those two are interesting ships and can provide good value from a personal and organizational point of view. The Terrapin should prove to be great for intelligence gathering, command operations support, scouting while the Cutlass can sufficiently haul, taxi, deploy, raid and more.
Congratulations on the Hammerhead! I'd love to get one of those, but you'll surely need turret gunners.

I melted a lot of stuff for that Hammerhead but I think it'll be worth it. And hell yeah, I'll take gunners wherever I can get them  ;D
