First and foremost, flying using keyboard and mouse is perfectly adequate. I would add they are planning more non-flying content in the future. The keyboard and mouse will remain standard for the game.
If you want to take it to the next step, I highly recommend dual T16000’s from Thrustmaster. Read or watch a few guides on dual stick set ups and adjust to your liking. I think they even have a stand-alone throttle now.
If you want to join crazy people, you have options from Thrustmaster (warthog), Virpil and VKB. I decided to go with Virpil. The Noobifier1337
has several videos on Virpil and Thrustmaster. He is planning a series on VKB and then comparing the flight sticks.Personal Experience:
After some research I decided to go with Virpil. They are heavily in-demand but give time windows when they restock the online store. I stayed awake one Sunday (window was 1-3AM EST) and was able to get my order in. They generally take a week to process and then another week to ship. TNT/FedEx. PROS
• Professional build quality
• Dual Cams per axis (replaceable)
• Software is easy to use
• *Solid Customer ServiceCONS
• Problems keeping items in stock due to demand
• Sticks are plastic construction (I like the warthog metal)
• Replacing or swapping cams requires moderate skill with tools (exposed circuit boards and small wires)
*So how does there customer service rank? I had an issue with one of the sticks. One of the hat switches did not work on arrival, so I reached out under a warranty issue. It did take about two weeks for them to reply, but once they did everything went clockwork. They issued a pick up and took care of shipping both ways at no cost to me. Between the initial delay, fix and international shipping it took two months.
While I wasn’t thrilled with the two week delay to respond. I’m happy a company in Belarus, picked up my hardware, fixed it and then sent it back at no cost. Yes my stick has made three international trips. They were also very apologetic for the issue. From what I’ve read about VKB, I would be SOL.
I’m currently using dual stick (HOSAS). I’ll post more as I get more time on them and after the new flight model. I’m curious if the new model will incorporate a throttle more (HOTAS).
