Need serious help with upgrading pc after years and years
« on: November 21, 2017, 01:31:36 PM »
The time has finally come. My desktop is in dire need of some upgrades.

Games I️ play: pubg, fortnite, overwatch, random MMO’s. Future games will be along these lines as well.  I’m more of a casual but my 950 just sucks for today’s games.

Current setup:
I7 3770k 3.5 processor
ASRock z66 mobo
Nvidia GeForce 950 gpu
8gb ddr3 ram by gskill
Corsair 750tx psu
My monitor is an Acer 22” with a max resolution is 1680x1050

I️ don’t want to drop 2k but also don’t want to replace something unless it needs to be replaced. I️ would rather not upgrade a part just because the next step up is a tiny bit better performance.

My thoughts:
1. Upgrade my 950 to a 1070

2. Upgrade my monitor - do I️ go 1080 or 1440? This is where I️ get confused.  Do I️ stay around 23” or go 27” ?? I️ don’t want to go too big and lose performance on select games.  I️ also don’t want to spend another $300 on a monitor in a year.

3. My PSU is going on 7 years with 0 issues. Does it need to be replaced?

4. Save the $ and keep my current 3770k cpu, motherboard, and ram because it still functions and has rest reviews.

Please tell me your thoughts and provide some suggestions! I’d love to order in the next few days!!

Well it depends on your price range. Personally I always default to a one off or all rule. If Im experiencing fps locks without a cpu/ram issues then I replace thee GPU, however if the socket on the board is no longer in the cycle I opt for a new build.

It appears to be that your more worried about FPS/ then general and overall stability. A Gpu is all you need. (also when was the last time you bother to clean out that GPU?)

You could up the RAM a bit, but that is not something that will be of dire need.
The Monitor f I was replacing that I would just dual monitor.

Thranxxxxx. I’m in need of your suggestions for what I️ should do with current parts of my desktop and what to replace!!

Just played a match of pubg (worst running game on my system) and memory was about 85% while processor was running at about 55%

The cpu looks good. Just upgrade the video card.

The monitor size doesn’t dictate performance. I game on a 46” tv and it’s good.

I agree, upgrade the video card and maybe add more RAM, memory is pretty inexpensive nowadays.

Yo!  1070 or 1070ti, double your RAM, decent low-mid range ASUS display... you'll be setup well.

With your 8GB, how many sticks (physically) is that?

alternative is a whole new PC for ~500$. The site has some builds for higher dollar amounts too!

Found a 24.5” Asus monitor (1ms/144hz) with great reviews on Newegg for $200

Someone in my area is also selling a used 24” acer xf240h (1ms/144h/1080p/free sync (amd adaptive sync) for $120.  This is a $250 monitor on Newegg and has 5/5 stars 39 reviews.

Looking at the EVGA 1070 SC or 1080.

I️ currently have 4 sticks of ddr3 (2x2x2x2)

Side note- my Corsair 750tx PSU is 7 years old (0 issues)....do I️ need to replace this?

Everyone says go 1440 to future proof but this is where I️ get all confused!!

Ended up buying 16gb of some cheaper ram to hold me over, as well as a EVGA 1070 SC.

Now just need a 1ms/144hz cheaper monitor and I’m set for a while
