WvW - Melee Warrior Build
« on: September 03, 2012, 01:03:39 pm »
So far I've tried the following builds combined with Bull's Charge, Frenzy or Berzerker's Stance, and Endure the Pain.  Haven't really opened all of the skill points so just concentrating here on weapon build combinations for melee warrior.  I should be lvl 30 today and unlock Signet of Rage as well.

Build 1.
Ax & Ax - DPS
Longsword - DPS/Mobility

Build 2 - (*favorite)
Ax & Ax - DPS
Sword & Warhorn - Mobility

Build 3.
Longsword - DPS/Mobility
Sword & Warhorn - Mobility

Build 4.
Hammer - CC
Sword & Warhorn - Mobility

Build 5.
Longword - DPS/Mobility
Ax & Shield - DPS/CC

So far my favorite and I think most useful build has been Ax & Ax + Sword & Warhorn.  Allows me to rush in with frenzy/bull's charge and go directly into melee DPS rotation - then get out by switching weapons and using 33% run buff + cripple immunity and savage leap to get back to safety when needed.  The other one I like is Longsword + Sword & Warhorn for huge mobility but I find it lacking a bit on the DPS side.

I know there are Longbow and Rifle fans out there for the warrior - but I'm looking for melee builds.  Any other weapon combinations worth taking a look at for warrior?

Somebody yesterday asked me about my WvW build and I thought - if only I had time to explain the strategy behind my build.  So here is an expansion on my WvW melee warrior build.

This build is designed to finish off the overextended target, catch a running target, or jump in and out of the battle finishing off targets while leaping from range and executing well timed eviscerate finishers, and AoE'ing the opposition while maintaining full mobility.  This is not a 1v1 build!  And this is for those warriors allergic to ranged weapons such as myself.

I have chosen to go with Ax/Ax and Sword/Warhorn.  This provides me with the mobility needed to get from point A to point B faster than any other class in the game and the burst punch needed to finish off targets quickly.  This build is for the hero type on the front lines - currently putting together a video to show more or less the strategy behind this type of build, should be done just need a bit more footage since I keep forgetting to process F9 (record) and miss some really great fights that show off the build.

For melee warriors its important to have gap closers and the ability to get out when things get a bit hairy and you start taking focus fire.

You start with Sword/Warhorn.  Generally with this build you have a HUGE gap closer in the combo: Savage Leap + Bull's Charge.  In a range fight choosing your target and hitting this combination will land you right smack in the face of the opponent you are targeting.  As soon as you get there - make sure you switch weapons (Ax/Ax) because now you go into your DPS rotation.  First thing I do is hit dual strike.  This gains you fury.  Generally target will hit their root/stun breaker and immediately roll.  Then you DPS with Chop until they finish their first roll or defensive skill at this time you hit your ranged cripple (Throw Ax).  I play using Signet of Rage with grants me swiftness, fury, and might for 30 seconds.  Now there is no way he is getting away since target is crippled and I have 30secs of swiftness (33% run buff) on a 60 sec CD - lower with the trait.  With the trait you can have nearly 100% up-time on swiftness using charge and signet of rage.  Hit Frenzy and go through whirling ax, chop, etc - and then burst a huge crit on eviscerate which is the highest single burst skill a warrior has.

So this is more or less some of the things and counters you have available and a general idea on how to play the class without going into to much situational play.  Again - this is not a 1v1 build - this is a finisher, gap closer, dps build with huge mobility and huge burst that contributes to the team in catching priority targets and offering melee DPS and Burst.  I first developed this build as a roamer type between objectives in sPvP and it turns out it has great utility in WvW as well.

Now when zerg vs zerg - it starts the same.  Pick a target within the zerg jump in using your gap closers.  Go through your DPS rotation - generally AoE like whirling Ax and Cyclone Ax work great and its some of the best DPS a warrior has available.  Then when focused fire change weapons - hit savage leap to get out and Charge to remove immobilize and cripple/frozen a couple of rolls and you are back to safety between your comrades in range.  Rinse and repeat.

When defending a keep I usually go down to the lower door and try AoE the door using melee burst.  Whirling Ax and Eviscerate almost exclusively to tear up siege equipment and anything near the gate.

So small guide for those wanting a WvW melee type build that allows for burst and DPS while still being able to effectively come back to the safety of the ranged classes.

Ill have to check out the sword/war horn set now, i was using the gun when needing ranged dps to stay away from groups too big to tackle with melee fighting and the gun also has the cripple shot but now that i think about it that cripple is only 3 seconds and i cant close on the target fast enough before it wears off. I am already using the axe/axe combo for melee because its the best i have seen in terms of dps with moving targets.  Greatsword was next but you cant move with hundred blades.
